HOW FASTING,SILENCE,AND SOLITUDE TEACH US TO BE HOLY

The root of holy indicates, “separate , distinct from.” This is a central aspect of freedom. God is separate from creation. God is holy  in that He is free from the physical limitations and from the sinful compulsions of the physical world. Holiness, then , is more than a moral category of sinless perfection. To be holy means that we lead a life that is separated from the toxic influence of the world, distinct from the value system and motivations of the world. Holiness means that we lead a life based on God’s agenda, breaking free from the force field of worldly desires and drives. This holiness includes the pursuit of moral purity, but it goes beyond purity to develop in us a genuine motivation to seek God and God’s kingdom.

Seen in this light, fasting, solitude and silence take on an entirely new meaning in our battle with sin. In willingly giving up food, company, or conversation for a set time, we are weakening the power that these things have over us in daily life. We are free to choose above and beyond our natural inclinations. And we will be even better prepared to choose above and beyond the natural inclinations that are harmful to us-such as overreacting, sexual promiscuity or gossip.

I am free when i can live in this world without becoming a prisoner to it. This detachment is a positive expression of my commitment to God and my freedom in Christ.
